794 CE -1185 CE
Court was moved from Nara to Kyoto at the onset of the Heian Period by Emperor Kanmu, who ended the Emishi Wars. This was largely due to Nara being flooded with Buddhism and Emperor Kanmu sought to shift back to Shintoism.
An important figure in world history, Murasaki Shikibu, the worlds first known novelist, a woman of the Heian court. She is known for the "Tale of Genji".
