The Ashikaga Period is marked by Zen Buddhist culture, and weak ruling from the government.  The Ashikaga Bakufu was continually weakening, especially after the assassination of Ashikaga Yoshinori in 1441.  

This, "Warring States Period" encompassed Japan becoming part of trade on a more global scale, improving the knowledge and technology present in Japan.
